Machine in Flux – Other
Sunjoo Lee and Ko de Beer are artists in residence at MAD emergent art center. They are mainly working on a project called ‘Machine in Flux – Wood.’ It is a performative drawing machine, that responds to various forces in its environment and translates them into a delicate drawing that resembles annual rings of a tree.
The shape and tones of this drawing is constantly influenced by the surrounding light intensity. They are currently in progress in make it respond to more stimuli, such as humidity, temperature etc, inspired by actual tree growth patterns. The machine moves by following the line it draws, in a spiral motion. The more the drawing grows, the more it makes the invisible forces clearly visible.Fascinated by the beauty, form, slow and complex growth of plants, Sunjoo and Ko likes to bring nature and technology together. In this project, they question the main drive of today’s technological development, which are utilisation and productivity. The artists look at the overlap between machine behaviour and the natural state of being. This project therefore aims to seek possibilities of future machines as an intuitive, creative, and organically behaving entities.Sunjoo is a graduate from Design Academy Eindhoven. Ko de Beer is an autodidact in electronics. They collaborate to make hybrid works that combine art, technology, and nature.
